What is a Tip Calculator?
A tip calculator helps you quickly determine how much to tip based on your bill amount, the desired tip percentage, and the number of people splitting the check. Tipping is a way to show appreciation for good service, and knowing the right amount avoids the mental math at the end of a meal.
Tip customs vary by country. In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurants. In many European countries, tipping is optional or a smaller amount is expected. Always consider local customs when traveling.
How to Use
1Enter the Bill Amount.
2Select a tip percentage from the presets or enter a custom value.
3Set the number of people splitting the bill.
4The results update instantly — tip amount, total bill, and per-person amount.
Formula
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
Total Bill = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People
Example: $75 bill, 20% tip, 3 people
Tip Amount = $75 × 0.20 = $15
Total Bill = $75 + $15 = $90
Per Person = $90 ÷ 3 = $30

Technically, tips should be calculated on the pre-tax amount, but most people tip on the total bill for convenience. The difference is small — on a $100 bill with 8% tax, it's the difference between tipping $20 and $21.60.
Many restaurants automatically add an 18–20% service charge for large groups (usually 6+ people). Check your bill before adding an additional tip to avoid double-tipping.
Tipping for takeout is optional but appreciated, especially at independent restaurants. 10–15% is generous for takeout. For delivery orders, 15–20% or a minimum of $3–5 is customary.
